Abaasa Joe Byakutaga is a Ugandan 3D animator, rigger, and now director based in Kampala. He works across character performance, rig development, and pipeline design, using Blender as his primary production tool.
Joe studied Animation and Game Development at Loyalist College in Canada, where he graduated with distinction. His training sharpened both his technical skill and his approach to visual storytelling.
He is part of the team at Creatures Animation Studio in Uganda, contributing to productions including Kunda & Friends and Thandi’s Playtime. His work spans rigging, character development, and technical problem solving within the animation pipeline. These projects strengthened his ability to deliver within deadlines and collaborate across departments.
Alongside studio production, Joe has now directed an independent animated short. The recent film was completed in three months while he was working on other studio projects. It was produced by a small team as a practical test of lean production methods and scalable workflow design.
Joe’s work focuses on clarity, performance, and efficient execution. He is committed to building sustainable animation production in Africa and developing original IP that can travel beyond
