synopsis

Fairy Rice Mother is a charming comedic short centered around family, identity, and rice. When Ruby’s attempt at making her family’s traditional rice dish goes terribly wrong, her late abuela sends her help in the form of Francis, a hardass magical expert who’s ready to kick Ruby’s rice into shape.

Joelle Velez

Joelle Velez is an actress, award-nominated writer, and award-winning filmmaker based in Chicago. A graduate of The Second City Film School, her first 2 films were selections at 20+ film festivals and have received 3 awards collectively. Her latest screenplay, Work: The Novela, The Unauthorized Musical No One Asked For is a Finalist for the Chinonye Chukwu Emerging Writing Award. She has also been selected as a Finalist for the Warner Brothers Discovery Access Program and the Oberlin Screenwriting Intensive. Velez is a classically trained actress and performer. Prior to her creative pursuits, she was a venture capital investor and business analyst. In 2025 she launched Sparkly Productions, which is dedicated to changing the world with: sparkly productions.
