Presented by Black & Brown Femme Films

The Vibe: Celebration of Women of Color Pop-Up Museum was an immersive cultural experience honoring the creativity, resilience, heritage, and global influence of women of color.

Across two days, art, fashion, music, dance, history, and storytelling came together in a living museum created for discovery, participation, and community connection.

Inside the Experience

A Living Museum of Culture and Imagination

Museum-style installations invited visitors to explore how women of color have shaped artistic traditions, cultural expression, music, fashion, and the stories carried from one generation to the next.

Rather than observing culture from a distance, guests were encouraged to interact, create, dance, dress up, share memories, and become part of the experience themselves.

Exhibitions and Activities

Culture in Every Form

Heritage and Tradition

The Crown Exhibition

Ceremonial wedding crowns and headpieces from cultures around the world represented love, royalty, beauty, identity, and tradition.

Music and Rebellion

The Rock & Roll Exhibit

The exhibition recognized the often-overlooked women of color whose artistry, innovation, and resistance helped shape music history.

Fashion and Expression

The Culture Closet

Guests expressed themselves through colorful skirts, scarves, and gele headwraps while learning about the traditions carried through clothing.

Memory and Wisdom

Mama Used to Say

A community message wall invited visitors to preserve the advice, humor, strength, and wisdom passed down by mothers and elders.

Made to Be Experienced

Art, Movement, Memory, and Play

Global Grooves brought visitors together through guided dances from around the world. Guests also learned gele-wrapping techniques, created beaded jewelry, explored interactive displays, and shared their own cultural memories.

International snacks, a community book giveaway, and hands-on activities made the museum an inviting experience where culture could be explored across generations.

Two Distinct Experiences

From Family Discovery to Museum After Dark

12:00–4:00 PM

Family Museum Experience

The daytime session welcomed families and young visitors into an educational and creative environment filled with exhibitions, music, movement, food, books, and participatory activities.

Adults 21+

Museum After Dark

In the evening, the museum transformed into a soulful adults-only gathering featuring live music, spoken word, storytelling, and an open mic for poets and performers.

Community and Identity

A Celebration of Collective Brilliance

The Vibe created a space where history was not treated as something distant or fixed. It was experienced through clothing, rhythm, memory, movement, conversation, and the people gathered together.

By centering women of color across cultures and generations, the pop-up museum celebrated the ways creativity can preserve heritage, challenge erasure, and strengthen community.

The Vibe was made possible in part through support from the Field Foundation of Illinois and Illinois Humanities.
