ViBe: Exhibition Celebrating Women of Color

September 27–29, 2024

Hammy Wammy

4633 N. Clark Street, Chicago, Illinois

Presented by Black & Brown Femme Films with support from the Illinois Humanities Activate History grant

ViBe: Exhibition Celebrating Women of Color was a three-day cultural exhibition honoring the music, dance, art, food, innovation, and rites of passage shaped by women of color around the world.

Presented by Black & Brown Femme Films, the pop-up exhibition invited visitors on a celebratory journey through the vibrant tapestry of pop culture created by BIPOC women. Across generations and cultures, ViBe recognized the ideas, traditions, creativity, and everyday brilliance that continue to influence how communities live and express themselves.

We Are a ViBe

A Journey Through Culture, Memory, and Imagination

ViBe celebrated pop culture as something larger than entertainment. It lives in the rhythms people carry, the food shared between generations, the art that gives communities a visual language, and the traditions that mark life’s most meaningful moments.

The Culture Around Us

Women of Color as Creators of Culture

The exhibition centered women of color not as footnotes to popular culture, but as artists, innovators, tradition keepers, and cultural leaders whose influence can be felt around the world.

By bringing these histories and creative expressions together, ViBe offered a space for discovery, recognition, and celebration—connecting personal memory with a much larger cultural story.

Across Generations

A Three-Day Community Exhibition

ViBe included adult exhibition sessions and a family day, creating opportunities for visitors of different ages to explore the cultural contributions of BIPOC women. The weekend transformed the exhibition into a shared gathering place for learning, reflection, and joy.

Exhibition Support

ViBe was presented by Black & Brown Femme Films as an Illinois Humanities grantee partner with support from the Activate History grant.
